Writers and Bitches

Yeah, there are some of those.  Fortunately I’ve run into some pretty nice writers in my day and in this genre too.  But there are also attention seeking bitches, so beware.  I decided, because I’m friends with a really fabulous writer, Remittance Girl — to address something that happened yesterday that really pissed me off.  It still does.

I like the way RG has developed her work and self in the genre.  I like the way she stands up for herself too.

My guess is that Joan Defers (not really sure *who* she is) except that she appears to have a couple published works under that nom de plume and a twitter account as that, somehow found an old film of my Uncle Spence’s and she had the audacity to blog about it, and then link it to me, and then tell me she wrote something about me over in twitter.

What Ms. Defers doesn’t understand (or didn’t until yesterday) was that my father and my uncle both made all kinds of films.  All kinds.

I’m more curious though, about why she would need to say anything at all about my writing and relatives?

Like why?

I don’t know.  Did she feel like linking to me was going to do her a favor?  I’m very published in this genre, both at Cleansheets and ERWA, archived actually.  What does a writer gain by pulling a stunt like that toward another writer? Impishness? Cuntyness?  Bitchiness?

I’m not clear.

One thing?  I write a far different end of the genre than many of the writers I know.  Maybe because of who my Dad was.

There is going to be tons of competition in this genre, and many of the women writing in it are just as bitchy as women in real life.  I’m not sure to ally with them or not, frankly.

I think if you’re a writer you can count writer friends on one hand.  Maybe nail that down to five fingers on one hand.

I miss both dad and my uncle Spence.  Loved them both.  What little I had of them time-wise.

Here is my Dad, Don Brown aka Bob Vosse:

And here is my Uncle Spence — Spencer Crilly aka Zoltan Spencer

I try not to be a cunt toward other writers.

God knows I’ve met a few, though.

One more thing.  I left a message as a comment at Joan Defer’s blog because of what she had done.  She didn’t bother to publish it.

Addendum: Ms. Defers posted what I said in the comments, and I invited her to comment on my blog post.  We’ll let that stand.

xxoo!
