than the breathing in the other room

of a bed you don’t want to get into

love left long ago

not that you remember the year

only that it left, and that life

left that year

you begged him for a child

and he rolled away, his back turned

there were eyelet curtains at the house that year

why he wanted to deny you everything

isn’t something you can fathom

only that the time has come to go

so that you never have to not feel love

nobody could have been more cruel

than the man who wanted to be your husband

the sad thing was you let him
